Frequently asked questions

Do I need to be in shape before starting BJJ?

Absolutely not, BJJ will help you get in shape, and the techniques can be applied by people of all body types and sizes. That said, being flexible, strong, and in good condition can be good for competitions. But that's a problem for later. Let's start with the techniques!

How does BJJ relate to other martial arts?

It is clearly the best martial art of all time 😉. It has no punches or kicks, it is all about grappling. So it is similar to wrestling with submissions (locks and chokes). The best part of it is that you can go at 100% intensity, without hurting each other (of course injuries can happen, it is a martial art after all). This also makes it great for self-defense, as you get used to the intensity and are unlikely to accidentally hurt someone. UFC was started to find the best martial art, so it is no surprise that BJJ dominated everything during the first editions.

Is it dangerous to practice BJJ?

Although injuries can happen from time to time, it is a safe sport for the most part. Most people train at a high intensity several times a week for years without getting hurt. Most injuries come from people not being careful with themselves and each other. If you are new, experienced people know to be careful with you. Don't worry, it is safe enough for you to give it a try.
